Erin is trying to make Emilia feel better, but her words also show that she is a bit more naive about the pre-cataclysmic world. “People could travel wherever they wanted” was never true, even if the Cataclysm just made it physically impossible.

Minkah’s more realistic understanding of this aspect of the past world, probably owes a lot to their background. Minkah’s parents were both from Ghana, and were just going to study abroad for a couple of years. They never had any wish to become permanent residents in Sweden. But the Cataclysm happened and they were stuck. Minkah has probably spent a lot of time wondering how their life would have been different, if their parents had not been stuck in a foreign (and in many ways hostile) country during an apocalypse.
